Both columns hold whole numbers, even for a quarter: 0.25 TB is 250 GB, and 0.25 TiB is 256 GiB. Use the TB → GB column when a size counts in 1000s, and the TiB → GiB column when it counts in 1024s.
The binary column is 2.4 percent higher in every row, because 1024 is 2.4 percent more than 1000. At 20 the gap reaches 480, with 20000 GB against 20480 GiB. Every row is exact, so no cell carries the ≈ sign that marks a rounded value.

This table mixes the systems. A 1 TB size is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, and counted in gibibytes that is 931.322574615478515625 GiB, about 931.32. To see it, choose TB in From and GiB in To.
A program that counts in 1024s but writes the unit as GB shows that number with a GB label, so 1 TB can look about 68.68 GB short. No bytes are missing; only the unit changed.
The shortfall grows with the size. At 20 TB the GiB figure is 18626.45, about 1373.55 below 20000, yet the share stays near 6.87 percent in every row.

The mixed reading divides a byte count: GiB = TB × 1,000,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824. For 1 TB that gives the 931.32 GiB in the table above.
A tebibyte is the larger unit of the two. 1 TiB converts to 1.099511627776 TB, almost 10 percent more than a terabyte, and 1 TB converts to 0.9094947017729282379150390625 TiB.
Fractional sizes follow the same rules. 2.5 TB is 2500 GB and 0.25 TiB is 256 GiB, with nothing rounded in either. The binary factor 1024 is 2 to the 10th power, the step between every binary prefix and the next.
To go back from gigabytes to terabytes, divide by 1000, so 5000 GB is 5 TB and 1024 GB is 1.024 TB. For gibibytes to tebibytes, divide by 1024 instead.
How to convert TB to GB
The converter opens on 1 TB to GB. Select Convert without changing anything and it gives 1000 GB.
- Put the terabytes in Quantity. A decimal such as 0.5 or 2.5 works. Leave out commas and the TB symbol.
- From shows TB and To shows GB. For the size in gibibytes, set To to GiB. For tebibytes, set From to TiB. Swap units turns the page into a GB to TB converter.
- Keep Exact (no rounding) for every digit, or pick Round to decimal places and enter 2 in Decimal places for figures like 931.32.
- Select Convert. The Result panel shows the GB value and its equation, and Copy result puts both on the clipboard with the precision note.
Cancel stops a conversion that is still running. Reset returns the form to 1 TB to GB, and any edit clears the old result.
Limits
The converter works on the number you enter. It cannot read a drive, count the space a system reserves or say how many photos fit in a terabyte, because that depends on the files.
TB, TiB, GB and GiB are four separate entries in the lists. The tool does not know which one a label meant, so pick the pair that matches how your number was counted.
A terabit (Tbit) is one eighth of a terabyte, so 1 Tbit is 125 GB. Choose Tbit in From for a size given in terabits. The lists also hold PB, EB and larger units, so a size past the terabyte range converts the same way.
Quantity takes plain digits with a decimal dot, so 1.5 works while 1,5 or 2 TB gives an error. Large results print in full, and 1 TB in bytes reads 1000000000000 B.
Questions
Are there 1000 or 1024 GB in a TB?
A terabyte holds 1000 gigabytes. The 1024 figure is the binary count, where a tebibyte holds 1024 gibibytes. The two units differ in bytes, since 1 TiB is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes and 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000. When a source says 1024 GB make a terabyte, it is counting binary units.
How many GB is 2 TB?
2 TB is 2000 GB. In binary units, 2 TiB is 2048 GiB. Counted in gibibytes, a 2 TB size is about 1862.65 GiB, the figure a program that counts in 1024s shows. The converter gives all three, so pick TB or TiB in From and GB or GiB in To.
How many TB is 1 GB?
1 GB is 0.001 TB, one thousandth of a terabyte. Select Swap units on this page, type 1 in Quantity, and Convert gives 0.001 TB with nothing rounded. In binary units, 1 GiB is 0.0009765625 TiB, because 1 divided by 1024 is 0.0009765625.
Is 5000 GB the same as 5 TB?
Yes. In decimal units 5000 GB is exactly 5 TB, because 5000 divided by 1000 is 5. The binary pair for 5 TiB is 5120 GiB. So a 5 TB size is 5000 GB, while 5000 GiB is only 4.8828125 TiB.
