MB to GB converter
To convert MB to GB, divide the number of megabytes by 1000, so 1 MB is 0.001 GB and 1024 MB is 1.024 GB. If your number counts binary mebibytes (MiB), divide by 1024 instead to get gibibytes (GiB). The converter below does either division exactly, and it runs in your browser.
1 GB = 1000 MB. 1 GiB = 1024 MiB.

MB to GB conversion table
| Input number | MB → GB | MiB → GiB |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.001 | 0.0009765625 |
| 10 | 0.01 | 0.009765625 |
| 100 | 0.1 | 0.09765625 |
| 250 | 0.25 | 0.244140625 |
| 500 | 0.5 | 0.48828125 |
| 512 | 0.512 | 0.5 |
| 1000 | 1 | 0.9765625 |
| 1024 | 1.024 | 1 |
| 2048 | 2.048 | 2 |
| 4096 | 4.096 | 4 |
| 8192 | 8.192 | 8 |
Read across a row to compare the two readings of one number. The MB column divides by 1000 and the MiB column divides by 1024, so the binary answer is always the smaller one. No cell is rounded.
The 1024 row answers "1024 MB to GB" both ways. As megabytes it is 1.024 GB, and as mebibytes it is exactly 1 GiB. The 512, 2048, 4096 and 8192 rows also give whole or half gibibytes, because each of those numbers is a power of 2.
MB to GB formulas
Decimal (base 10)
GB = MB ÷ 1000
Example1024 MB = 1.024 GB
Binary (base 2)
GiB = MiB ÷ 1024
Example1024 MiB = 1 GiB
Both formulas follow from byte counts. A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes and a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes, so one gigabyte holds 1000 megabytes. A mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes and a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, so one gibibyte holds 1024 mebibytes.
A mixed reading goes through bytes as well. To turn MiB into decimal GB, multiply by 1,048,576 and divide by 1,000,000,000, so 1024 MiB is 1.073741824 GB. Choose MiB in From and GB in To, and the converter does that step for you.
To go back from gigabytes, multiply instead: MB = GB × 1000 and MiB = GiB × 1024. So 2 GB is 2000 MB, and 2 GiB is 2048 MiB.
How to convert MB to GB
The page opens on 1 MB to GB. Selecting Convert right away shows 0.001 GB.
- Type the number of megabytes in Quantity. Decimals such as 1.5 and scientific notation such as 2e3 work. Leave out commas and the MB symbol.
- Keep From on MB and To on GB. For the binary reading, choose MiB in From and GiB in To. Swap units flips the pair for a GB to MB answer.
- Leave Output precision on Exact (no rounding), or choose Round to decimal places and type a number in Decimal places.
- Select Convert. The Result panel shows the answer in GB, the full equation and the same size in eight units under Other equivalent units.
Copy result copies the equation and its precision note. Reset puts the form back on 1 MB to GB.
Limits
This page converts a number you type. It does not open a file, measure a folder or predict the space a download takes on your device.
The From and To lists hold MB and MiB as separate units. When a document writes MB, the converter cannot tell which one it meant, so you choose the unit that matches your source.
Megabits are a different unit again. A number in megabits needs Mbit in From: 100 Mbit is 0.0125 GB, one eighth of the 0.1 GB that 100 MB gives. For a speed in megabits per second, use a data rate converter instead.
Type 1024, not 1,024, because a comma or a unit symbol in Quantity gives an error. Results come out in full, with no scientific notation, so 1 MiB to GB reads 0.001048576 GB.
Questions
Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB?
In decimal units, 1 GB is exactly 1000 MB, and that is how this converter reads GB and MB. The 1024 figure belongs to the binary units, where 1 GiB is 1024 MiB. Some sources write GB and MB for the binary sizes, so check which reading a number uses, then pick GB or GiB here.
Is 1024 MB equal to 1 GB?
Not in decimal units. 1024 MB converts to 1.024 GB, which is a little more than 1 GB. The pair that matches exactly is 1024 MiB and 1 GiB, and the converter shows it as 1 GiB with nothing rounded. A source that calls 1024 MB one gigabyte is counting in binary units.
How many GB is 500 MB?
500 MB is 0.5 GB, or half a gigabyte, because 500 divided by 1000 is 0.5. Read as binary units, 500 MiB is 0.48828125 GiB. To check another size, type it in Quantity with From on MB and To on GB, then select Convert.
Is 2048 MB 2 GB?
In decimal units 2048 MB is 2.048 GB, so it is a little over 2 GB. In binary units 2048 MiB is exactly 2 GiB, because 2048 divided by 1024 is 2. Going the other way, 2 GB converts to 2000 MB, which is 48 MB less than 2048 MB.
Which is bigger, 1 MB or 1 GB?
1 GB is bigger. A gigabyte is 1000 megabytes, so 1 MB is only 0.001 GB, one thousandth of a gigabyte. Counted in bytes, 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes and 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. The binary units keep the same order, since 1 GiB is 1024 MiB.
