KB to MB converter
To convert KB to MB, divide the number of kilobytes by 1000, so 500 kB is 0.5 MB and 1500 kB is 1.5 MB. For binary kibibytes (KiB), divide by 1024 to get mebibytes (MiB), so 1024 KiB is 1 MiB. The converter below works out either answer exactly in your browser.
The unit lists write the kilobyte as kB, with a small k. 1 kB = 1000 bytes and 1 KiB = 1024 bytes.

| 2048 | 2.048 | 2 |
| 5000 | 5 | 4.8828125 |
Read a row across to see one number in both systems. The kB column moves the decimal point three places, so 750 kB is 0.75 MB. The KiB column divides by 1024 and gives longer decimals such as 0.732421875 MiB, printed in full.
Four rows land on round mebibytes: 64 KiB is 0.0625 MiB, 256 KiB is 0.25 MiB, 1024 KiB is 1 MiB and 2048 KiB is 2 MiB, since those numbers are powers of 2. The 1000 row shows the reverse, with exactly 1 MB against 0.9765625 MiB.
KB to MB formulas
Decimal (base 10)
MB = kB ÷ 1000
Example1500 kB = 1.5 MB
Binary (base 2)
MiB = KiB ÷ 1024
Example2048 KiB = 2 MiB
A kilobyte is 1000 bytes and a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes, so it takes 1000 kilobytes to fill one megabyte. A kibibyte is 1024 bytes and a mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes, which makes 1024 kibibytes per mebibyte.
The two systems meet only through bytes. 1 KiB converts to 0.001024 MB, and 1 kB converts to 0.00095367431640625 MiB. Pick KiB in From with MB in To, or kB with MiB, and Convert shows these values with no rounding.
To go from megabytes back to kilobytes, multiply by the same factor instead. 2 MB is 2000 kB and 2 MiB is 2048 KiB, and Swap units sets up that direction on this page.
How to convert KB to MB
The page loads with 1 kB to MB already chosen. Select Convert first and it answers 0.001 MB.
- Type the kilobytes in Quantity, for example 750, or 2.5e3 for 2500. Use a decimal dot, and leave out commas and unit letters.
- From reads kB (kilobytes) and To reads MB (megabytes). For a size counted in 1024s, choose KiB in From and MiB in To. Swap units reverses the pair.
- For a shorter answer, set Output precision to Round to decimal places and change Decimal places from its starting value of 6.
- Select Convert or press Enter. The Result panel prints the MB figure and the equation, then the same size in B, bit, kB, KiB, MB, MiB, GB and GiB.
Download text writes byte-size-conversion.txt with all of those rows. Reset brings back 1 kB to MB, and a Cancel button shows while a conversion is running.
Limits
This page converts a number that you type. It does not open a file or read its size, and it cannot make a file smaller. Take the size from wherever it is listed, then enter it here.
KB on a label can stand for 1000 or 1024 bytes. Some converters and guides write KB and MB for the binary units, so a 1024 answer is not a mistake on their part. The lists here keep kB and KiB apart, and you pick the one your source used.
Kilobits are smaller again. A kilobit (kbit) is one eighth of a kilobyte, so 8 kbit make 1 kB and 1 kbit is 0.000125 MB. Sizes given in bits need kbit or Kibit in From.
Tiny and huge numbers both print in full, without E notation. 0.001 kB is 0.000001 MB, and 5e9 kB is 5000000 MB.
Questions
Which is bigger, KB or MB?
A megabyte is bigger. One MB holds 1000 kB, so 1 kB converts to 0.001 MB, a thousandth of a megabyte. In binary units the step is 1024, and 1 MiB holds 1024 KiB. In either system, a number of megabytes stands for more data than the same number of kilobytes.
Is 1000 KB the same as 1 MB?
Yes, in decimal units. 1000 kB converts to exactly 1 MB, because a kilobyte is 1000 bytes and a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. In binary units the answer changes: 1000 KiB is 0.9765625 MiB, a little short of one mebibyte, because a mebibyte needs 1024 KiB.
Is 1024 KB equal to 1 MB?
Only in binary units, where 1024 KiB is exactly 1 MiB. In decimal units 1024 kB is 1.024 MB, slightly more than one megabyte. A source that says 1024 KB make 1 MB is counting kibibytes and mebibytes under the KB and MB labels, so check which one your number uses.
Is 5 KB bigger than 5 MB?
No. 5 MB is a thousand times larger than 5 kB: 5 kB is 0.005 MB, and 5 MB is 5000 kB. In binary units the factor is 1024, so 5 KiB is 0.0048828125 MiB. A size in kB only passes a size in MB when its number is more than 1000 times larger.
