Bytes to GB converter
To convert bytes to GB, divide the byte count by 1,000,000,000, so 2,500,000,000 bytes is 2.5 GB. For binary gibibytes (GiB), divide by 1,073,741,824 instead: 4,294,967,296 bytes is exactly 4 GiB. The converter runs in your browser and prints both answers with every digit.
A byte is 8 bits. Giga means 10 to the 9th power, and gibi means 2 to the 30th.

Bytes have no binary form, so one count sits behind both columns. Every GiB cell is 0.931322574615478515625 times the GB cell beside it, about 7 percent lower, because a gibibyte holds more bytes than a gigabyte.
The rows 1073741824, 2147483648 and 4294967296 are 2 to the 30th, 31st and 32nd power, so they land on 1, 2 and 4 GiB. Round counts such as 1000000000 do the reverse and give whole gigabytes with long GiB values.

Giga means one billion, so a gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Gibi means 1024 × 1024 × 1024, which is why a gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, about 7.4 percent more than a gigabyte.
The lists hold B for bytes and bit for bits. A count in bits needs bit in From, and 8000000000 bit converts to 1 GB, since every byte is 8 bits.
To turn gigabytes back into bytes, multiply by the same numbers. 3 GB is 3000000000 B and 3 GiB is 3221225472 B. Swap units sets up that direction on this page, and the table's rows work the same way read from right to left.
How to convert bytes to GB
The page starts on 1 B to GB. Convert then shows 0.000000001 GB, one billionth of a gigabyte.
- Type or paste the byte count in Quantity as digits only. 123456789 works, 123,456,789 gives an error, and 1.5e9 is a short way to write 1500000000.
- From holds B and To holds GB. For the binary reading, set To to GiB and keep From on B, since there is no binary byte. Swap units turns the pair into GB to bytes.
- Exact (no rounding) shows every digit. To read a long GiB value at a glance, pick Round to decimal places and type 2 in Decimal places, and 123456789 bytes then shows ≈ 0.11 GiB.
- Select Convert. Other equivalent units repeats the count in kB, KiB, MB and MiB as well, which suits a file well under a gigabyte.
Reset returns to 1 B to GB. Download text saves the result and all eight rows as byte-size-conversion.txt.
Limits
The converter works on the count you enter. It cannot open a file or read a disk, so take the byte count from wherever your system lists it. For an image, the File size row of the Image dimensions tool shows the count.
Some sources divide by 1,073,741,824 and still write GB. When a program shows 4294967296 bytes as 4 GB, it used the binary reading. This page shows the same count as 4.294967296 GB and as 4 GiB, so both labels are clear.
A byte count copied from another program may carry thousands separators, as Image dimensions writes them: 4,294,967,296. Remove the commas before you convert, or Quantity shows an error.
Large counts print in full, and the page adds no length limit of its own. 1e15 bytes is 1000000 GB.
Questions
How many bytes are in 1 GB?
1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes, one billion, in the decimal units this converter uses for GB. The binary gibibyte is larger at 1,073,741,824 bytes. Select Swap units, keep 1 in Quantity and select Convert, and the result reads 1000000000 B for one gigabyte.
Is 1024 bytes equal to 1 GB?
No. 1024 bytes is 1 KiB, one kibibyte. As part of a gigabyte it is 0.000001024 GB, or 0.00000095367431640625 GiB. Filling one gibibyte takes 1,073,741,824 bytes, which is 1024 × 1024 × 1024 and 1,048,576 times as many as 1024.
Is 1 GB 1 million bytes?
No. A million bytes is 1 MB, and 1000000 B converts to 0.001 GB. A gigabyte is a thousand times more, at 1,000,000,000 bytes. Read as binary units, a million bytes is 0.000931322574615478515625 GiB, the first row of the table above.
How many bits per GB?
A gigabyte holds 8,000,000,000 bits, because each of its 1,000,000,000 bytes is 8 bits. A gibibyte holds 8,589,934,592 bits. To check, choose GB in From and bit in To, then select Convert. Bits and bytes are separate entries in both lists.
