Frequently asked questions
How much data can a QR code hold?
Capacity depends on content, encoding and error correction. The encoder selects a QR version from 1 through 40 and reports the actual limit when the content does not fit. Content made only of digits uses numeric mode (up to 7,089 digits at Low correction), content made only of digits, capital letters, spaces and $%*+-./: uses alphanumeric mode (up to 4,296 characters), and everything else is stored as UTF-8 bytes (up to 2,953 bytes) without an ECI header, so a scanner that assumes another encoding can misread non-ASCII text. There is no separate character cap. Shorter content generally makes a less dense code.
Will it work with every scanner?
Recognition depends on print size, contrast, camera and app support. Keep the included white margin and avoid stretching or cropping the PNG. Wi-Fi credentials, contact imports, Unicode text, SMS messages, calendar events and payment links can be interpreted differently by different apps. Test the actual downloaded output before distributing it. A successful test on one scanner is not a universal guarantee.
Can I edit a code after creating it?
These are static QR codes. Changing the form requires a new code and download; the old image keeps its old content. A website at an encoded URL may change independently. This tool does not provide tracking, dynamic redirects or automatic app-store selection.
How are structured payloads encoded?
Wi-Fi uses the WIFI format, contacts use vCard 3.0 or MeCard, email uses mailto:, SMS uses sms:, phone uses tel:, locations use geo:, and events use iCalendar with UTC times. WhatsApp uses a wa.me link. App-store links and wallet payment URIs are encoded directly. Delimiters are escaped for each format. Your wallet must provide a valid recipient, network and payment URI; this tool does not validate those payment details.
Why did generation fail?
Check required fields, date order and coordinate bounds. For a capacity error, shorten the content or lower error correction. For PNG export errors, reduce pixels per module or try a current current browser. Actual browser memory and canvas limits determine the largest export. Any edit replaces the code that was being created; Reset clears all inputs.
