What can File X-ray find?
PDF earlier incremental saves and possible live text under simple drawn rectangles; DOCX tracked changes and comments; PPTX hidden slides, notes and comments; XLSX hidden or very-hidden sheets, explicit hidden rows/columns and comments; stored PDF form values and attachment names; Office document properties and inventories of embedded data/external links; and JPEG metadata and embedded EXIF thumbnails.
Does this guarantee that every secret is removed?
No. These are specific checks, not a forensic or legal certification. Office visible text, hidden rows/columns, embedded files, custom XML and other copies of information can remain. Inventories marked inspection only have no dedicated cleaning action. The saved report distinguishes original findings, selected changes and remaining findings. Review your document manually.
Can I inspect or clean an XFA PDF form?
Its readable metadata, linked earlier saves, catalog attachment names and AcroForm values are inspected. XFA's own form data and complete appearance are not checked. Covered-text checks and cleaning are unavailable; use an XFA-capable PDF application to review and export the form.
How does PDF cleaning change my file?
It builds a new PDF from the current visible page images. Original text, old saves, metadata and attachments are not copied. Selectable text, tags, links, forms, signatures, layers and vector detail are lost. Anything still visible in a page image stays visible. This is not an accessibility-preserving operation.
Are covered-text findings definite redaction errors?
No. They identify extractable text painted before a simple solid rectangle with matching rendered bounds. Page design can produce matches. Partial words, rotated or complex shapes, transparent fills and annotations can be missed. A clean report does not certify safe redaction.
Can a thumbnail reveal the uncropped original?
Sometimes an embedded preview predates cropping or other edits. The thumbnail shown here is the actual embedded JPEG, but it is not necessarily an original or a full-resolution copy.
What changes when I remove hidden Office content?
Deleting hidden sheets also removes unused shared strings, defined names, pivot tables/caches and cached chart/formula values. Formulas and charts may need repair or recalculation. Deleting hidden slides changes slide numbering and may break links. Accepting supported tracked changes permanently keeps the final text. Complex structural revisions require Word; other actions can still be used.
