What does each removal choice do?
Personal metadata removes non-rendering metadata blocks from JPEG, PNG and WebP, including EXIF other than required orientation, XMP, IPTC, comments and trailing data. It keeps color profiles and rendering information, which can themselves contain identifying text. JPEG thumbnails and appended extra images, including HDR gain maps, are removed, so HDR rendering may change; PNG/WebP animation chunks stay.
EXIF only removes the EXIF block except required orientation. Other metadata remains. EXIF GPS directory only removes that directory but keeps other recognized EXIF fields. It rewrites EXIF, so unknown fields may be omitted and proprietary MakerNote offsets may no longer work. Neither selective choice removes GPS copies from XMP, IPTC or MakerNotes. Use the output metadata view to see readable retained tags.
Will orientation, color or image quality change?
Metadata-only choices preserve encoded primary-image payloads, color profiles and required orientation without recompressing the image. Keeping the orientation tag avoids silently rotating or mirroring the photo. If EXIF cannot be safely rewritten, an error offers the PNG conversion alternative. Removing metadata does not erase private content visible in the picture.
Re-encode to PNG makes a new raster image with orientation applied to its pixels. It does not copy original metadata. It keeps one decoded image, flattening animation and additional pages. Color profiles, wide-gamut/HDR appearance and bit depth may change; new browser-generated color or structural information may remain. PNG output can be larger than the original.
Which image formats can I use?
JPEG, PNG and WebP support metadata-only editing. You can also inspect metadata in TIFF, HEIC and AVIF, plus readable EXIF blocks in WebP. More decodable formats can be converted to PNG: GIF, BMP, ICO, TIFF, AVIF and SVG, with HEIC and other formats depending on the browser. Extension and MIME labels are not admission gates. SVG is rasterized locally without fetching external resources or running scripts.
Some proprietary or malformed tags cannot be interpreted. The table reports readable tags and container blocks; a missing tag is not proof of absence. Binary fields are identified by byte count. This is not an exhaustive forensic sanitizer for every format. There is no tool-imposed file-size, pixel or processing-time limit; real browser memory and decoder limits still apply.
Can I cancel, repeat a run or keep my original?
Yes. Cancel & clear stops processing and removes current results. Selecting a new file or changing the removal choice clears the previous download. Each run uses the selected original, and the original file is never overwritten. Download creates a separate file named cleaned-image.
