How to resize a PDF

To resize a PDF, choose the file, set the new paper and sizing, check the preview, then download. The steps use the labels on the page.

1. Select Choose PDF, or drop one PDF on the box. Its name and file size appear.
2. In Paper size, pick A4, Letter, Legal, A3 or Custom size, then Portrait or Landscape in Orientation. Custom size opens Width (mm) and Height (mm).
3. In Content sizing, keep Fit content to paper or pick another mode. Set Fit margin / edge inset (mm) and Placement if you need them.
4. In Pages to resize, keep All pages or pick Selected pages and type numbers such as 1-3, 5.
5. Select Resize PDF. The preview shows the real pages of the new file, and Previous and Next move through them.
6. Select Download resized PDF. A file named report.pdf is saved as report-resized.pdf.

Changing any setting clears the result, so the download always matches the preview. Reset clears the file and puts every setting back to its default.

Make every page the same size

A PDF built from scans or merged files often has pages of several sizes. Resizing all pages to one paper size fixes that. Each page is fitted on its own, by its visible area, so a Letter page, an A4 page and an A3 page all come out as A4 with their content centered.

The scale depends on how far each page is from the new size. A US Letter page fitted to A4 is scaled to 97.3% and gets a blank band of about 12.6 mm above and below, because A4 is narrower and taller. An A4 page fitted to Letter is scaled to 94.1% with about 9.2 mm of space at the left and right. In the same run, an A3 page shrinks to 70.7% and an A5 page grows to 141.4%.

Nothing is stretched. Width and height always scale by the same amount, so text and pictures keep their shape.

Fit, shrink, keep or scale

Content sizing decides how the old page sits on the new paper. Fit content to paper enlarges or shrinks each page until it meets the paper edges, less the margin. Shrink only to fit reduces pages that are too big and leaves smaller ones at their original physical size. Keep original size changes the paper without scaling.

Custom scale uses a percentage of the original size, where 100 leaves it unchanged. Fit margin / edge inset (mm) keeps blank space around fitted content. With a 10 mm margin, a Letter page fitted to A4 drops from 97.3% to 88%.

Placement puts the content in the center or in one corner, and the margin then sets its distance from the edges. Keep original size and Custom scale can put content outside the new paper. That part is cut off, so check the preview before you download.

What changes in the resized PDF

Each selected page gets the new paper size in all its page boxes: media, crop, trim, bleed and art. The content is scaled and moved by one transformation, not redrawn as an image, so text stays selectable and vector graphics stay sharp. Pages you did not select keep their size and content, and the page order does not change.

Links, annotations and standard form fields move with the content and are not flattened, and form fields stay editable. Complex annotations and XFA forms may look different, so check an interactive PDF in a reader. Bookmarks remain, but the zoom and position they point to are not recalculated. A page stored sideways keeps its rotation, and the new size follows the way it is displayed.

Saving writes a new file, which breaks any digital signature, and metadata is not removed. Content hidden outside the old crop area stays in the file, so resizing is not redaction.

Limits

Resizing changes the page size, not the file size. The tool does not compress images, so it cannot bring a PDF under an upload limit such as 1 MB. The new PDF can be larger than the original, and the summary says so when it is.

A custom side can be 1.06 to 5080 mm, the smallest and largest page a PDF can describe. The margin must be less than half the shorter paper side. A password-protected PDF is refused until you choose an unlocked copy, and a damaged or incomplete file is reported as unreadable. The tool takes one PDF at a time.

The tool sets no page or file-size limit of its own. A very large PDF can need more memory than the browser tab has, and Cancel stops a run at any point. If the preview cannot render in your browser, the download still works, so open it in a PDF reader to check it.

How can I fix PDF pages that are different sizes?
