How to crop a picture to a square
To crop a picture to a square, choose the image, move the square over the part you want and select Crop image. Aspect ratio is already set to Square · 1:1.
- Select Choose image and pick one photo or graphic.
- The box appears as the largest centered square. On a 4032 × 3024 photo it is 3024 × 3024 pixels, with Left at 504.
- Drag the box to move it. Drag a corner handle to make the square smaller or larger, and the sides stay equal.
- To place it exactly, type Left (px) and Top (px). A new Width (px) sets the same Height (px), and the other way round.
- Select Crop image, then Download PNG.
Reset selection brings back the centered square. Clear image removes the picture from the page, and Replace image opens the next one.
Where the centered square starts
The starting square uses the shorter side of the picture as its width and height. It sits in the middle of the longer side, so equal strips are cut from both ends. When the leftover is an odd number of pixels, the extra one is cut from the right or bottom edge.

A square picture starts fully selected, so nothing is cut unless you shrink the box. The general crop page works another way: switching it to Square · 1:1 keeps the upper-left corner of the box.
Limits
This page crops, so the strips outside the square are gone from the download. To make a picture square and keep all of it, add padding instead with Image Aspect Pad. Aspect ratio offers Square · 1:1 and Free rectangle only, with no 4:5 or 16:9 setting.
The square keeps its pixels at their original scale. A 3024 × 3024 crop downloads at 3024 × 3024 pixels, so resize it afterwards if a site asks for 1080 × 1080. The start is the geometric center of the picture, and the tool does not look for faces or subjects.
The download is always a PNG, which can be larger than the JPEG photo you started with. The result panel says when it is. Each run crops one image. A phone photo stored sideways opens upright, and the square is centered on the upright picture.

How do I make a photo square without cropping?
Add padding instead of cropping. Image Aspect Pad adds transparent or colored space until the picture reaches 1:1, so every pixel of the photo stays. This page always removes the strips outside the square. Choose the pad when the whole picture matters, such as a wide group photo, and the crop when the subject fits inside a square.
How do I crop a photo to 2x2?
A 2 × 2 inch photo is square, so crop it here first. Then set its print size: 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI prints at 2 × 2 inches. Resize image changes the pixel count, and Image DPI changer writes the density without resizing. The office that asks for the photo may have rules beyond size, so check them too.
Is there a way to crop an image not in a square?
Yes. Change Aspect ratio to Free rectangle, then drag any of the eight handles or type a width and height that differ. Reset selection on this page returns to the centered square. The general Crop image page starts with the whole picture selected, so it suits a free crop better.
How do I crop a picture into a certain shape?
This page crops squares and, with Free rectangle, other rectangles. For a round picture, Circle crop image positions a circular crop and downloads a PNG with transparent corners. Neither tool offers a star, a heart or a freehand outline. The square crop here keeps every pixel inside the box at full opacity.
