This days between calculator runs in your browser and counts calendar days from a start date to an end date. It counts the start date and leaves out the end date, so February 28 to March 1, 2024 is 2 days, or 3 with Include both dates checked. It also gives weeks and a years, months and days breakdown.

Whole calendar days, not elapsed clock hours. Weeks are exactly 7 days. Years and months are whole calendar months counted forward from the earlier date. Numbers use English (US) digit grouping.
How to count the number of days between two dates
Enter two dates, then select Calculate difference. Direction and Include both dates change how the tool counts.
- Pick the Start date and the End date. If your browser shows a plain text box, type each date as YYYY-MM-DD.
- Choose a Direction. Signed (end minus start) makes the result negative when the end date comes first. Absolute (always positive or zero) ignores the order.
- Check Include both dates if the end date should count too. It adds one day to the span.
- Select Calculate difference, or press Enter in a date field. Swap dates reverses the two dates. Reset restores the example of February 28 to March 1, 2024.
- Read the total in days, then the In weeks and In years, months and days lines. Changing a date or an option clears the result until you calculate again.
- Select Copy report to copy a text summary, or Download report to save it as date-difference.txt. The report lists both dates, each result and whether the end date was counted.
How the date difference calculator counts days
The result counts whole calendar days from the start date to the end date. Signed mode makes it negative when the end date comes first, and Absolute mode drops the sign. Include both dates makes the span one day longer, so March 1 to February 28, 2024 gives -2 days, or -3 with the box checked.
Leap years count. February 28 to March 1 is 2 days in 2024 and 1 day in 2025, and January 1, 2024 to January 1, 2025 is 366 days. An impossible date such as February 29, 2023 or April 31 gets an error message.
The tool reads each date as midnight UTC, so a daylight saving change cannot add or remove part of a day. March 9 to March 11, 2024 crosses the US clock change and still gives 2 days. The In weeks line splits the size of the span into 7-day weeks and leftover days, so 15 days shows as 2 weeks and 1 day.
How years, months and days are counted
The years, months and days line starts at the earlier date. It adds as many whole calendar months as fit up to the later date, then counts the days left over. Every 12 months show as 1 year. Like the In weeks line, this line never carries a minus sign, even when the signed result is negative.
The count uses real month lengths. When the starting day does not exist in the month reached, the tool uses that month's last day. January 31 to February 28, 2025 is 1 month, and February 29, 2024 to February 28, 2025 is 1 year.
A calculator that counts back from the later date can split a span near a month end differently. January 30 to March 1, 2025 shows 1 month and 1 day here, while counting back from March 1 gives 1 month and 2 days. Both ways give 30 days in total. With Include both dates checked, the span runs to the day after the later date.
Limits
This date duration calculator counts whole calendar days between two dates you enter. It takes no time of day or time zone, so it gives no hours or minutes of elapsed time.
It counts every date, weekends and holidays included, and cannot skip working days. It cannot add or subtract days to find a new date. It does not fill in today's date on its own, so type today's date to count the days since a past date. Months above 12 roll into years, and the page shows no single total-months or total-years figure.
Dates run from 0001-01-01 to 275760-09-13, the last date a browser can represent. Every date follows the Gregorian calendar, even before countries adopted it, so the tool does not remove the days dropped in the 1582 and 1752 calendar switches. October 4 to October 15, 1582 gives 11 days. The tool needs JavaScript and Web Workers, and it gives no Excel formula.

January 1, 2025 to January 1, 2026 is 365 calendar days, and the same span a year earlier is 366 because 2024 was a leap year. Working days that skip weekends need a business days count.
